Southern California Edison’s (SCE) Tehachapi Renewable Transmission Project, a series of new and upgraded high-voltage transmission lines spanning 173 miles, will safely deliver enough energy to power approximately 3 million homes when it’s completed. Currently scheduled to be completed in 2015, the project will provide a crucial link to tap into wind, solar and other sources of energy for Californians.
The Tehachapi project route crosses numerous communities in Kern, Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties. In this video, crews install the transmission lines above the 605 freeway in the San Gabriel Valley. SCE worked in conjunction with the California Highway Patrol and CalTrans to briefly close the highway as the helicopter pulled the transmission line between two towers that straddled the freeway.
Once energized, the Tehachapi Renewable Transmission Project will address constraints on the region’s electric system by providing additional capacity and flexibility. The project will also significantly boost electric reliability for SCE’s customers.
