ROSEMEAD, Calif., March 6, 2002-By partnering with Southern California Edison (SCE), the Los Angeles Times will receive more than $102,000 in incentives for installing energy-efficient equipment in its newspaper assembly plant located in Irwindale, California. The Times received valuable design assistance from SCE through a California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC)-sponsored program called "Savings By Design."
"Savings By Design encourages high-performance, nonresidential building designs throughout all of California's business sectors," said Steve Herfert of SCE's new construction services department. "When the Times decided to build this facility, the Savings By Design program identified several potential energy efficiency strategies to include in the planning and construction of the site."
Every morning, newspapers are brought to the 328,000-square-foot assembly plant to receive advertising supplements, which are fed by six state-of-the-art inserting machines. The inserting machines, recommended by SCE, are 24% more efficient than industry standards and process as much as 81,000 pages per hour. The facility also benefits from high-efficiency cooling and air conditioning, a lighting system that cost-effectively combines electric and natural daylighting and high-efficiency air compressors that operate the inserter equipment.
By installing energy-efficient systems, the facility is estimated to save nearly 1.5 million kilowatt-hours per year, or approximately $200,000 annually.
Besides the cost-savings to the Times, the Savings By Design program illustrates SCE's commitment to the environment, energy efficiency and cleaner air due to avoided emissions associated with power generation. Lower energy demand also means less strain on California's electricity generation resources during high-use periods. SCE customers are encouraged to participate in the program before building new facilities or expanding or renovating existing operations.
