ROSEMEAD, Calif., May 6, 2016 — Southern California Edison’s 11th annual Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month celebration of Asian business and community partnerships is today at SCE’s Energy Education Center in Irwindale.

Pedro Pizarro, SCE president, will speak about the utility’s commitment to civic engagement and diversity and inclusion. The event will bring together Asian business and community partners, honor AAPI energy-efficient champions and highlight SCE’s partners with its mission to give back to the communities it serves.

This year, SCE award recipients are Brighton Management, Center for Asian Americans United for Self Empowerment (CAUSE) and LTL Attorneys LLP.

Nanxi Liu, CEO and co-founder, Enplug, Inc., will serve as keynote speaker. While a senior at the University of California, Berkeley, she co-founded a successful startup that develops polymers that enable vaccines to survive without refrigeration. The invention won her the 2014 Young Innovators Award sponsored by Microsoft and Nokia. Her latest startup, Enplug, is one of the most popular software used in the world to show interactive content on stadium and restaurant displays.

SCE’s 2016 AAPI award recipients are:

  • Brighton Management (Energy Efficiency Participation Award), a Chinese-owned company, owns or operates 45 major hotels based in Irvine. Through the properties’ participation in SCE’s energy-efficiency programs such as Energy Efficiency Express Solutions, Brighton Management has reduced its annual power usage by 265,000 kilowatt-hours — resulting in $42,400 in annual savings.
  • Center for Asian Americans Unified for Self Empowerment (Community Partnership Award) is focused on transforming lives and meeting the diverse needs of the AAPI community through active engagement in philanthropic activities. With the Asian Pacific Community Fund (APCF), $3 million has been awarded to affiliate agencies and other community organizations to enhance the lives of 225,000 people in 27 Asian and Pacific Islander languages, in addition to English and Spanish.
  • LTL Attorneys LLP (Diverse Business Enterprise Award) is one of the country’s largest minority and women-owned law firms. Its attorneys serve on boards of nonprofits, volunteer their time with local community agencies and other organizations and work on high-profile pro bono cases. In addition, attorneys also travel to refugee agencies and work with underprivileged children, assist victims of domestic violence and teach legal issues to Spanish-only speaking immigrants.
