OCEANSIDE, Calif., June 5, 2003—Employees of Edison International, parent company of Southern California Edison, and Vons, a division of Safeway Inc., recently presented a check for $56,000 to families of service men and women stationed at Camp Pendleton in Oceanside and March Air Force Base in Riverside.
The money came largely from the personal contributions of employees. Both Edison International and Vons matched donations made by their respective employees.
Money raised will be used to buy much-needed supplies, which will include Vons Gift Cards. With gift cards, families, some of which faced financial difficulty during the recent war in Iraq, can choose the specific items—food, diapers, toiletries, etc.—they need.
“We’re pleased our employees and those of Vons are able to help these families cope with financial difficulties at a time when their loved ones might be serving thousands of miles away,” said Katharyn Muniz-Bandoni, manager of Edison community involvement.
With more than 50,000 employees worldwide, the companies are major employers based in the San Gabriel Valley. Approximately 1,800 SCE employees work at the San Onofre Generating Station near Camp Pendleton in north San Diego County.
