ROSEMEAD, Calif., July 15, 2005 —The Board of Directors of Edison International (NYSE:EIX) announced today that J.A. (Lon) Bouknight Jr., 61, has been elected as the company’s executive vice president and general counsel, succeeding Bryant C. Danner, who recently retired.  Bouknight will report to Edison International Chairman John Bryson.  His appointment is effective July 29, 2005.

Commenting on the appointment, Bryson said, “We have worked with Lon for many years.  We have a deep admiration for him and for his extensive knowledge of the electric industry.  He is one of the most highly regarded lawyers in the country having represented some of the nation’s largest electric companies.  Lon will be a valuable addition to our executive team.”

Bouknight said, “I am excited about the opportunity to join Edison International, which I have represented as a client for many years.  I look forward to working with the company’s legal and management teams, which I know and respect.  Throughout my career I have sought opportunities to practice in the energy field on a national platform.  By joining Edison International, a leader in the energy industry, I will have a stimulating new challenge.”

Bouknight is joining Edison International after 11 years as a partner in the Washington, D.C., office of Steptoe & Johnson LLP, which has a national and international reputation for vigorous representation of clients before governmental agencies, successful advocacy in litigation and arbitration, and creative and practical advice in guiding business transactions.  From 1998 to 2004, Bouknight was chairman of Steptoe & Johnson, with responsibility for the management of the firm of more than 400 attorneys. 

Prior to joining Steptoe & Johnson in 1994, Bouknight was  partner at Newman, Bouknight & Edgar, a Washington D. C. firm known for its energy practice, and before that a partner at Tally, Tally & Bouknight in Fayetteville, NC.

Bouknight has been a member of the Council Group since 1979 and has chaired the Antitrust and Electricity Committees of the American Bar Association Section of Public Utility, Communications and Transportation Law.  He is a member of the Board of Visitors of Duke University School of Law.

Bouknight is a member of the North Carolina and the District of Columbia bars.  Bouknight received his B.A. in history from Wofford College and a J.D. from Duke University School of Law.  He and his wife, Deborah, have two children.
