Many journalists and media voices work tirelessly to factually report important issues, and Edison values the service those outlets provide. At times, however, public commentary about Edison International and Southern California Edison has included assertions that were inaccurate or misleading. That is when Edison for the Record has a role to play.
Ongoing public commentary on KBLA about a recent town hall included statements that were not correct. Rather than respond to every allegation, this EFTR addresses the most significant inaccuracies and provides the information our communities deserve.
Here are the facts:
- SCE agreed to participate in KBLA’s Nov. 6 town hall.
- While Pedro Pizarro, president and CEO of Edison International, has led and will continue to participate in public meetings and media engagements, he was never scheduled to attend the KBLA event.
- After learning that a plaintiffs’ attorney was on a panel, Edison withdrew its participation from the town hall, reminding KBLA that the company wouldn’t participate if plaintiffs’ counsel were present.
- Edison does not participate in public events with plaintiffs’ attorneys, as attendees likely are represented by attorneys, as is SCE; this can create ethical challenges, which can be avoided when lawyers and law firms do not participate.
- Although the plaintiffs’ attorney was removed from the panel, the attorney’s firm remained listed as a sponsor of the event on KBLA’s website.
- When Edison withdrew from the town hall, we offered to participate in an interview, and that offer remains open.
KBLA has shared that an apology is necessary to move forward. Edison doesn’t see any statements the company has made that are inconsistent with the facts. We regret that KBLA feels harmed.
